Conservacion Loros en Bolivia are involved with many Parrot conservation projects across Bolivia

Red-fronted, Blue-throated and Military Macaws, Tucuman and Scaly-naped Amazons,
Cliff and Mountain Parakeets as well as Red-billed and Yellow-faced Parrots.
On a similar trip in 2019 we saw 27 Parrot species including all 8 Macaw species.

ITINERARY

This Parrot watching Eco-tour starts by arriving in Santa Cruz, Bolivia on the 24th  September however if you would like to take advantage of an extra day then arriving on the 23rd September gives us a day to check out the Parrots around the city including the Botanical Gardens

23rd September - Arrive Santa Cruz
Arriving at any time today and we will be met at the airport for a transfer to our hotel in the city centre. We will meet up and go for dinner at a local restaurant.
Overnight Santa Cruz

24th September – Santa Cruz
Anyone in the group not wanting to do the extra day should arrive at any time today. You will be met at the airport and taken to our hotel in the city centre. The whole group will meet up for dinner at a local restaurant.
Those who arrive for the extra day will be visiting the local Botanical Gardens and various parks in search of parrots in and around the city.
Some of the parrots we are likely to see are Green-cheeked Conures, Yellow-chevroned, Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Scaly-headed and Blue-headed Parrots as well as Blue-fronted Amazon and Blue-winged Parrotlets but we will concentrate on the parrots and their sub-species that we may not see throughout the whole parrot tour of Bolivia.
Overnight Santa Cruz.

25th September – Santa Cruz to Los Volcanes
Travelling for just 3 hours we will reach the valley known as Los Volcanes. This is not just a stopover there are still lots of opportunities to see parrots on the way here as well as at this lodge in the forest.
The Bolivian sub-species of the Military Macaw can be found here and will be the main parrot that we want to look for here. This Macaw is almost an endemic sub-species with its range slightly extending beyond Bolivia into the very north of Argentina.
Other parrots that can be found here are Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, Blue-headed, Red-billed and Scaly-headed Parrots, Mealy and Blue-fronted Amazons and Green-cheeked and Mitred Conures.
Overnight Los Volcanes

26th September – Los Volcanes to Quirusillas
After an early morning observing the Military Macaws and other Parrots again in the valley we travel by road to Quirusillas. We have 4x4 vehicles to cope with the unpaved roads outside of the city.  The main parrots in this area are Tucuman and Blue-fronted Amazons and Green-cheeked and Blue-crowned Conures. Here the Tucuman Amazon is the priority as we will not see it anywhere else on the tour.
Overnight Samaipata.

27th September – Quirusillas to San Isidro
A very early start to search for the Tucuman Amazons again. We were more successful with this Amazon in the morning in 2019. After breakfast we will set off for San Isidro and our next hotel. It is from here that we could encounter the Red-fronted Macaw the first endemic parrot we will observe in the wild. We will have most of the afternoon to look for Parrots around San Isidro including Blue-fronted Amazon, Yellow-chevroned Parakeet and Cliff Parakeet.
Overnight Monteblanco Hotel, San Isidro.

28th September – Anamal and Las Juntas Reserves
All day to check out the Red-fronted Macaws and try to photograph them from every angle as they are on the cliffs, in flight, going down to the river for drinking and bathing as well as feeding in the trees. Here we can climb onto the cliff to get good vantage points to photograph the Red-fronted Macaws in flight or see them at their nest and roosting areas.
Let’s not forget all the other Parrot species that inhabit these dry valleys.
Grey-hooded, Yellow-chevroned and Cliff Parakeets, Green-cheeked, Blue-crowned, Mitred and White-eyed Conures and Blue-fronted Amazons will be on our list for this area.
Overnight Monteblanco Hotel, San Isidro.

29th September – Anamal and Los Juntas Reserves again for a full day with the Red-fronted Macaws. We will be taking advantage of the newly installed trails and hides to see these beautiful Macaws and all the other parrot species in the area
Overnight Monteblanco Hotel, San Isidro.

30th September – Anamal and Los Juntas Reserves and onto Cochabamba
An early start to reach the hide opposite the Red-fronted Macaw cliff for some close-up photography shots with more time to spend with the Red-fronted Macaws although once again we will be checking out the other Parrots here.
Both the Green-cheeked and Blue-crowned Conures are endemic sub-species and only in this area of Bolivia whilst the Mitred Conure here is possibly an un-described sub-species which would also make it an endemic.
The Cliff Parakeet, once a sub-species of the Monk Parakeet, has now been recognised as a separate species which is endemic to Bolivia and, in particular, to this region.
Afternoon will be a long drive to Cochabamba but we will still have time to stop and observe anything that we encounter along the way. You never know when we will see Parrots or anything else of interest.
Overnight Cochabamba Hotel.

1st October – Tablas Monte
Another early start, as there are no other closer hotels or lodges to where we need to be.
Today we go to Tablas Monte into the cloud forest around Cochabamba for some more special parrots.
Grey-hooded, Mountain, Barred and Andean Parakeets, Black-winged, Red-billed and Speckle-faced Parrots as well as the Scaly-naped Amazons are all very rarely photographed in the wild so these create our challenge for 2 days.
Overnight Cochabamba Hotel.

2nd October – Tunari National Park
Once again we go into the cloud forest to look for the challenging species. Grey-hooded, Mountain, Barred and Andean Parakeets, Black-winged, Red-billed and Speckle-faced Parrots as well as the Scaly-naped Amazons will be the main species we are looking for here because of their rarity but there are other species here including Scaly-headed Parrot, Blue-fronted Amazon and Green-cheeked, Blue-crowned, Mitred and White-eyed Conures. Overnight Cochabamba Hotel.

3rd October – Cochabamba to Trinidad
An early morning flight to Trinidad for the next part of our adventure.
Whilst we have been sleeping our drivers will take our 4x4 vehicles on a long drive to meet us in Trinidad.
As we go by a short flight we arrive in plenty of time to take a boat trip on the local river where we get the chance to see many water birds including herons, kingfishers and maybe some parrots but the main attraction here will be the Pink-river Dolphins although getting a good photo is a bit of a challenge but I am always up for a challenge – how about you???
Overnight Trinidad

4th October – Trinidad to La Cantina
We now travel to La Cantina into the savanna which floods for 8 months of the year, fortunately we are arriving in the dry season although it is possible there will be wet areas. The bonus for this unusual landscape is that the Blue-throated Macaw loves this habitat and although there are only between 200 and 250 individuals left in the wild they are being protected by a number of conservation projects. We are going to visit and stay at one of these projects so Blue-throated Macaws will be the main parrot to see in this region. The Blue-throated Macaw is endemic to Bolivia and only found in a very small area.
There are several Macaws in this area including Yellow-collared, Chestnut-fronted, Green-winged and Blue and yellow. The Blue and yellow Macaws are very close to the Blue-throated Macaws so we need to make sure we identify them correctly. Usually the Blue-throated will be in the palm trees whilst the Blue and yellow Macaws can be in any of the trees around.
Overnight La Cantina

5th October – La Cantina
A full day to enjoy the Blue-throated Macaws but as well as these and the other Macaws listed there are Yellow-chevroned and Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Scaly-headed and Blue-headed Parrots, Blue-fronted and Orange-winged Amazons, Blue-winged Parrotlets and Peach-fronted and Dusky-headed Conures.
All Parrots are great to watch but the 2 Parakeets here are endemic sub-species and only found in this region. It will be interesting to see if they can be distinguished from the nominate species.
Overnight La Cantina

6th October – La Cantina to Trinidad to San Ramon
Early morning around La Cantina to see more of the parrots around here before taking our vehicles back to Trinidad and then onto San Ramon parrot watching as we travel.
San Ramon itself is known for the incredible amount of Green-winged and Blue and yellow Macaws inside the village eating the nuts of the Acrocomia.
Overnight San Ramon

7th October – San Ramon
Early morning with all the Macaws and Parrots that will be feeding within the town of San Ramon.
After lunch we visit a private ranch where the Red-shouldered Macaws and Yellow-faced Parrots roost. There will be hundreds of these Macaws and Parrots. There are lots of other parrots in the area but the sight of these in such large numbers will be the target parrot species.
Other parrots include Yellow-chevroned and Cobalt-winged Parakeets, Scaly-headed and Blue headed Parrots, Blue-fronted, Yellow-crowned and Orange-winged Amazons, Blue-winged Parrotlets, Peach-fronted,Dusky-headed and White-eyed Conures, Yellow-collared and Chestnut-fronted Macaws
Overnight San Ramon

8th October – San Ramon to Trinidad to Santa Cruz
We will be checking out the parrots around the town again in the morning before driving back to Trinidad with a flight back to Santa Cruz followed by flights home.

Sorry our ADVENTURE has come to an end.
I am sure we will have many photos and lots of memories.
Until the next time Thank you.
