BRAZIL 2025
BRAZIL - APRIL 2025 - Blue Macaw Tour
Would you like to join Steve Brookes on a very special trip to Brazil with a chance to see up to 23 species of parrots of which 8 are Macaws including Lear’s Macaws (approx. 2000 in the wild) and the Hyacinth Macaw (approx. 5000-6000 in the wild) with a chance to see the newly released Spix's Macaws along with many other Brazilian Birds and wildlife as we travel through several states of Brazil in this stunning South American country
(full parrot list below).
Throughout this trip we are likely to see in excess of 150 bird species with many opportunities to photo, video or just observe them in their Natural Habitats.
In all a unique journey with many exciting encounters around every corner. In previous years we have seen about 400 Lear’s Macaws (close to a quarter of their entire wild population at the time) all together flying directly over us.
This will be a very popular trip and places will be limited.

ITINERARY OUTLINE
We will be starting this trip in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, moving north to visit the area for the Pfrimer's Parakeet (endemic to this area), before going further north to Piaui State for the Hyacinth Macaws. Then we travel north-east to the area where a small population of Spix's Macaws have been re-established in the wild. Travelling east from here we enter the roosting, breeding and feeding areas for the Lear's Macaws as well as Blue-winged Macaws. We then continue travelling east to Salvador on the coast where we can see the Jandaya Conures and Grey-breasted Conures then onto our flights home. Of course there are lots more Parrots as well as many other bird species with a few mammals along the way. Please note that Spix's Macaws are still difficult to see however we will be in the right area to see them but we just need a bit of luck. I was in this area in 2023 and although we did not find them, locals are saying that they are now coming to feed in their gardens and so I am very optimistic for this trip. ITINERARY
Day 1 - Arrive in Brasilia and overnight Day 2 - Brasília - São Domingos stopping on the way at Alto Paraiso or Chapada dos Veadeiros for Blue and yellow Macaws and White-eyed Conures Day 3 - Terra Ronca NP - Full day for the Pfrimer's Parakeet.. Day 4 - Terra Ronca NP - Full day with Pfrimer's Parakeet again although if we have had good views already we can check out the Yellow-faced Parrots and Peach-fronted Conures as well as all the other Parrots and Macaws Day 5 - Terra Ronca to Wolf Camp with an afternoon visit to the Hyacinth Macaw hide where a usual group of about 20 Hyacinths gather but has been known to be up to 105 Macaws Day 6 - Full day Wolf Camp - Hyacinth Macaw hide in the morning followed by a transfer to their other camp for the Maned Wolves. Day 7 - Full day Wolf Camp - Maned Wolves in the morning followed by a transfer back to the original Wolf Camp and an afternoon with the Hyacinth Macaws or the tool using Capuchin Monkeys who are stars from several TV documentaries. Day 8 - Wolf Camp to Serra da Capivara - Hyacinth Macaw hide again before we take our long transfer Serra da Capivara NP Day 9 - Full day Serra da Capivara - There are only Cactus Parakeets (in the parrot world) at this place but it is a good place to stop before our next long drive to Curaca besides it is worth seeing some of these Parakeets and some of the cultural sights in this National Park Day 10 - Serra da Capivara to Curaça - Our first chance to look for the Spix's Macaw in the afternoon. We will be going down the lanes close to the release site where twenty Spix's Macaws have been released after they became extinct in the wild. Unfortunately no one is able to visit the release site itself yet however locals are already seeing these Macaws on a regular basis so I am hopeful that we will see them ourselves this year. Day 11 - Curaça to Canudos - We will try again for the Spix's Macaws this morning. There are also Blue-winged Macaws in the same habitat so we may see some of these as well. We transfer to Canudos in the afternoon stopping at a roosting site for the Blue-winged Macaws on the way. Day 12 - Canudos - An early morning 4x4 trip to the top of the cliffs where the Lear's Macaws roost and nest. This time of year is getting close to the end of the breeding season so we should see the best of both worlds with large groups totalling several hundred flying from their roosting sites to their feeding sites directly over us, followed by watching the later nesters in their cliff hollows and hopefully watching one or more of their fledglings flying for the first time in the valleys. Although the Lear's Macaws are the main attraction here there are also many Blue-crowned Conures in the valleys as well as Blue-fronted Amazons flying over. In the afternoon we will go down the lanes to a local Fazenda for a group of Blue-winged Parrotlets and possibly more Blue-winged Macaws. Day 13 - Canudos to Jeremoabo - A second visit to the cliff tops for the awakening of the Lear's Macaws and their fly overs with more watching the ones still in the valley. In the afternoon we transfer to Jeremoabo where we can hopefully find a Lear's Macaw feeding site. Day 14 - Jeremoabo to Estancia - after a morning at the Lear's Macaw feeding site we take our transfer to Estancia in the afternoon Day 15 - Estancia to Conde - Down a lane near Estancia we can find the nesting, roosting and feeding sites for Red-shouldered Macaws as well as Jandaya Conures. There are also Peach-fronted Conures and Blue-fronted Amazons here although not in large numbers. In the afternoon we travel a short distance to Conde where we will be staying in a local resort hotel. Day 16 - Full day in Siribinha the next village down from our hotel where we will take a boat trip with local fishermen into the mangroves and onto some of the islands where we can find a small population of the Grey-breasted Conures. The last time I was here was 2023 and we saw these Conures in several places. They do not seem to be afraid of humans as they allow ed us to approach fairly close. There are also Jandaya and Peach-fronted Conures here, in fact on my last trip here I was able to photo all 3 species of Conure in one tree. Day 17 - Conde to Salvador - transfer to the airport for flights home. EXTRA ITINERARY
I am also planning a 4 night trip to Fazenda Fartura, in Santana do Araguaia Day 1 - Arrive in Brasilia and a transfer flight to Santana do Araguaia and onto Fazenda Fartura Day 2, 3 and 4 - Looking for all the Parrot species on the Fazenda which totals about 20 species where we will concentrate on the ones we would not see on the main trip. There are another 3 Macaw species here Scarlet, Chestnut-fronted and Yellow-collared Macaw of which the Yellow-collared is is of special interest as tests and papers are being put together to decide if this is a different sub-species due to the colouration of the collar. There are also Santarem (Pyrrhura amazonum) and Pearly (Pyrrhura lepida) Conures here. Day 5 - Transfer to Brasilia for Day 1 of the main trip |
