BRAZIL - OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2024
The Parrots of the Amazon

Visiting various places along the Amazon River
including
Itaituba, Santarem, Oriximina and Belem
with an optional extension to
the Marajo Islands.
A possibility of 37 Parrot species on this Ecotour some very unique to this region.

Itinerary
Day 1:
International flight to Sao Paulo. Sometimes this can be an overnight flight from your home airport to Brazil in which case we may have time to visit the local Botanical Gardens or the bird museum in the University.
Overnight in Sao Paulo
Day 2
: Late morning flight to Itaituba, then transfer to AMAZONIA NATIONAL PARK for some afternoon birding.
Area description: There are several trails inside the National Park with different lengths, we will access at least 2 of them, where the canopy of more than 40 meters reigns, in these places there are small streams (Igarapés), where it is also possible to find species linked to this type of environment. In addition, the Transamazônica is a great place to observe birds that are feeding in the trees with fruits in the margins of the road, most probable place to see parrots and parakeets.
Summary: Our main targets are Golden Conure (Guaruba guarouba) and Vulturine Parrot (Pyrilia vulturina). We also can find many other specialties such as Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao), Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus), Crimson-bellied Conure (Pyrrhura perlata), White-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris versicolorus), Golden-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris chrysoptera), Blue-headed Parrot (Pionus menstruus), Dusky Parrot (Pionus fuscus), Kawall's Amazon (Amazona kawalli), Mealy Amazon (Amazona farinosa).
Day 3: Full Day Birding in the AMAZONIA NATIONAL PARK.
Day 4: Full Day Birding in the AMAZONIA NATIONAL PARK.
Day 5: Full Day Birding in the AMAZONIA NATIONAL PARK.
Day 6: Transfer by boat to SANTARÉM (about 5 hours). AM or PM Birding according to the transfer.
Area description: Santarém is the third most populous city in the Pará state, located in the west portion of the Pará state is dominated for heterogeneous landscapes like humid forests, savannah-like formations, flooded forests, and fresh water beaches in a region named Alter do Chão sometimes referred as ‘Brazilian Caribe’ due the beauty of waters of the Tapajós River.
Summary: Our main targets are Tui Parakeet (Brotogeris sanctithomae), Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus), Short-tailed Parrot (Graydidascalus brachyurus), Southern Festive Amazon (Amazona festiva). We also have chances to see Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus), White-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris versicolurus).
Day 7: Full Day Birding in SANTARÉM.
Day 8: Full Day Birding in SANTARÉM.
Day 9: AM Birding. Late afternoon flight to ORIXIMINÁ.
Area description: Oriximiná city is located in Pará state in the north bank of Amazon River. This region is known mainly by its miner company that explores bauxite (rock with high aluminium content), but large patches of forests and campinas (a savanna-like vegetation) are common in this almost unknown portion of Amazon Forest.
Summary: We will search for Sulphur-breasted Conure (Aratinga maculata), Caica Parrot (Pyrilia caica), Dusky Parrot (Pionus fuscus), Painted Conure (Pyrrhura picta), Santarem Conure (Pyrrhura amazonum) and Red-fan Parrot (Deroptyus accipitrinus).
Day 10: Full Day Birding in ORIXIMINÁ.
Day 11: Full Day Birding in ORIXIMINÁ.
Day 12: Full Day Birding in ORIXIMINÁ.
Day13: Flight to SANTARÉM and BELÉM.
Area description: Belém is the capital of Pará State and as it is in the heart of Amazon Forest we have some nice areas to search for parrots.
Summary: We have chances to see White-bellied Parrot (Pionites leucogaster); Jandaya Conure (Aratinga jandaya), Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet (Touit purpuratus) and Scarlet-shouldered Parrotlet (Touit huetii).
Day 14: Full Day Birding in BELEM.
Day 15: Possible morning birding before flight home via Sao Paulo
Or Day 15: transfer to MARAJO ISLANDS with afternoon birding.
Day 16: Full Day Birding in the MARAJO ISLANDS
Summary:
We will be looking for the Yellow-crowned Amazon sub-species A.o.xantholaema endemic to these islands as well as Blue-winged Macaw (Primolius maracana) and Red-bellied Macaw (Orthopsittaca manilata).

Day 17: Possible morning birding before flight home via Sao Paulo
