Parrots of the World by Steve Brookes
Reviewed by Rosemary Low Parrots are arguably the world’s most colourful and diverse group of birds. A book devoted to photographic images of more than 150 species cannot fail to please. Nearly all the photos were taken by Steve on his famous small group trips. The text is short but probably unique in a parrot book in that it relates to his own experiences – where the photo was taken or what the birds were doing. For example, a beautiful shot shows a pair of Golden-capped Conures in eastern Brazil at their nest. Three young are looking out. Steve wrote: ‘Within a couple of minutes a group of adults flew in and began feeding the youngsters which had immediately popped their heads out of their nest holes. About 12 adults were taking turns to either feed the young or look out for predators, and it was fascinating to watch this behaviour.’
Such remarks really bring the images – which are superb, anyway – to life, thus this book is not just a collection of photos that do not relate to each other. At only £14.99 this is superb value for 176 pages on very good quality paper. Everyone who loves parrots – and those who are destined to after turning the pages – will want a copy for their bookshelves. I know I will dip into mine again and again. “Parrots of the World by Steve Brookes is a stunning photographic collection of the world of our rarest and most common parrots. Steve captures beautiful close-ups and landscapes that have clearly taken great skill and patience to capture and includes a brief description or funny fact. I love that though compact in size, this book loses none of the colourfully visual coffee table book charm.”
