BRAZIL 2026

To CELEBRATE the
60th ANNIVERSARY
of
The PARROT SOCIETY UK

PARROT WATCHING ECOTOUR
to the
PANTANAL
and
BURACO DAS ARARAS
BRAZIL

BRAZIL - 15th to 23rd OCTOBER 2026

Would you like to join The Parrot Society UK and Steve Brookes (Wild Parrots Up Close) on a very special trip to Brazil with a chance to see up to 18 species of parrots of which 6 are Macaws including the Hyacinth Macaw along with many other Brazilian Birds and wildlife as we travel through the Southern Pantanal in this stunning South American country.

Throughout this trip we are likely to see in excess of 150 bird species with many opportunities to photo, video or just observe them in their Natural Habitats.

We also have chances of some rare mammals such as the Giant Anteater and Giant River Otter with a chance of Jaguar as we travel on the river in the Pantanal
plus snorkelling in the Rio Prata likened to swimming in an aquarium.

In all a unique journey with many exciting encounters around every corner.

ALL THE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS ON THIS PAGE HAVE BEEN TAKEN BY STEVE BROOKES ON PREVIOUS TRIPS TO THE AREAS WE WILL BE GOING TO ON THIS TRIP.
PLEASE NOTE :-
If I can have at least 10 and up to 20 clients on this trip I will be able to keep costs down as much as possible.
The cost below is what the trip would be for 12 people in 2024. This trip is going in 2026 and unfortunately I cannot fix those costs yet but they should not go up by too much.
I am looking for a verbal commitment as soon as possible with a commitment fee of £250 at the end of February or as soon after if there are any places left available after that time.
One third of the cost of the trip will then be required a year before the start of the trip with the balance being paid 90 days before the start of the trip.
Unfortunately these are the only terms I can get with securing so many rooms at the lodge.

ITINERARY
15th October 2026
Arrive in Brazil – this is usually an overnight flight so you would start late afternoon on the 14th October from your country of origin.
It is normal to arrive in Sao Paulo followed by an internal flight to Campo Grande with a transfer to our hotel.
Depending how early we arrive in Campo Grande. we should have some time to visit a local park where we can see some of the city Parrots.
Overnight Campo Grande
16th October  Leaving Campo Grande we excitedly make our way towards the Pantanal and arrive at our lodge for the next 4 nights, Pousada Aguape, just in time for lunch. Who will spot the first Hyacinth Macaw either flying or in one of the roadside palm trees.
Each day after lunch we will have time to ourselves for siesta, a swim in the pool or check out the wildlife local to the lodge (it’s a very hot time of day so not much wildlife will be about until later in the afternoon).
After our break we will be taking a walk around the lodge grounds and have our first close encounter with the Hyacinths as well as many other birds and wildlife including parrots such as Blue and yellow Macaw and Nanday Conures.
Other birds will include Bare-faced Curassow, Chopi Blackbird, Saffron Finch and also the Toco Toucan and watch out for the Armadillos that visit the dining area every day.
Overnight Pousada Aguape
17th October
Morning walk where we shall see some of the birds mentioned previously plus a few more such as Scaly-headed (Maximillian's Pionus) Parrot, Red-shouldered Macaw, Monk and Yellow-chevroned Parakeets as well as woodpeckers, woodcreepers and with some luck the lovely Rufous-tailed Jacamar.
In the afternoon we will do a Photo Safari by the safari truck, when, besides birds we might find some animals such the Marsh Deer and Giant Anteater, always looking out for more parrots.
Overnight Pousada Aguape
18th October
Morning Forest walk in a different habitat in search of different species of parrots such as Yellow-collared Macaws, Blue-fronted Amazons and White-eyed Conures as well as more birds and mammals.
After lunch we will take a boat ride on the local river where we usually see lots of  Kingfishers, Heron, Caimans, Capybara and with some luck Giant River Otters.
Overnight Pousada Aguape
19th October
This morning we will be joining the Hyacinth Macaw Project Team as they show us the work that they do. We will be following their vehicle in the safari trucks to see some of the nesting sites for the Hyacinth Macaws. They will be climbing the nest trees and bringing down the chicks that are in the nests for weighing, measuring and ringing (if they are the correct size). We will have opportunities to photo the chicks at close range and also have a chance to photo their parents in flight as they fly close by waiting to get back to the nest. This is a routine they are very used to so it is not stressful.
Late afternoon we will be doing another Safari by truck, with the hope of finding some of the species of birds and mammals we have missed. We should stay out long enough to do some night driving in search of nocturnal animals and birds.
Overnight Pousada Aguape
20th October
An early morning visit to the edge of the river where we should find the Blaze-winged Conures. Usually in a group these Parakeets are an amazing encounter
After breakfast we will check out and transfer to Bonito.
Bonito is a tourist town with many amazing shops where we can buy some souvenirs of our trip however we will still see some of the Peach-fronted Conures and other parrots as they are in the grounds of our hotel and around the town.
In the late afternoon we will go to a place within the town where lots of Blue-fronted Amazons arrive for their roosting site. In amongst them are a few Orange-winged Amazons and Yellow-faced Parrots.
Overnight in our hotel in Bonito.
21st October
An early morning visit to Buraco das Araras where we can observe the Green-winged Macaws flying in the crater.
Buraco das Araras (meaning Macaw Hole) is a huge sandstone crater, a geological formation resulting from the collapse of boulders creating this enormous cavity of about 500m in circumference and 100m deep located in the middle of the cerrado in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. It is home to a wide variety of birds, especially Araçari toucans and Green-wing Macaws.
The crater is part of the 29-hectares Private Reserve of Natural Heritage (RPPN) and is connected to the RPPN Rio da Prata with 307 hectares.
Late morning we will have a tour of the Rio da Prata with a snorkelling experience not to be forgotten – it is said to be similar to swimming in an aquarium. If swimming or snorkelling is not your thing then some of the group can go back to Buraco das Araras for more Green-winged Macaw action. The sun is in a different direction in the afternoon so different angles for photos are achievable.
We will all be having lunch at Rio da Prata to also take advantage of the Parrots and other birds that reside in the gardens here including Green-winged Macaws, Peach-fronted Conures, White-eyed Conures and the very rarely seen Yellow-faced Parrot.
Return to our hotel in Bonito for overnight.

22nd October
Another visit to Buraco das Araras, you cannot get enough of these Green-winged Macaws.
After lunch we will be travelling back to Campo Grande.
Overnight Campo Grande
23rd October
Around the city of Campo Grande there are a large number of city dwelling Macaws and Parrots.
We will accompany the Macaw Project Team, who are monitoring the nesting sites around the city in the morning.
The Macaws are very prominent with up to 400 pairs of Blue and Yellow Macaws nesting within the boundaries of the city.
Blue and Yellow Macaws are not the only ones as a number of Green-winged, Red-bellied, Red-shouldered Macaws with some Hyacinth, Yellow-collared and Blue-winged Macaws.
Some of the Blue and Yellow have hybridized with Green-winged Macaws naturally. A phenomenon that researchers are looking into to try to find out why??
Unfortunately all good things must come to an end and therefore after lunch we have to transfer to the local airport and after a short internal flight we take our International flights home with all our Memories and Photos/Videos of all that we have seen.
What will have been your highlight of this amazing journey??? – the Hyacinth Macaws will take some beating on any trip!!!

Pre and Post Main Tour.
If you would like to extend your Brazilian experience there are also extra opportunities to join a pre-main tour trip or a post-main tour trip to see some different parrot species in other areas or if you wanted to just do a bit of sight-seeing then I can arrange anything else in Brazil for you such as a trip to Rio de Janeiro for the Corcovada and Sugar loaf Mountain or a trip to Iguassu Falls on the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay.
